I have always been interested in tunes that stick out from the rest. When I wrote this tune a few years ago, I had been listening to the music of Zoe Conway, Daithi Kearney, and Brian Finnegan. I noticed that these musicians had some tunes in weird time signatures (in Irish music) such as 11/8 and 7/8. I enjoyed listening to these tunes and decided to write a tune in 11/8 myself. I was inspired by the hydra because of its many heads. The final part of the tune is in 9/8 like a typical slip-jig. You could say that two of the hydra’s heads have been removed.
