St Brigid’s Day on February 1st is a national holiday in honour of our matron saint. In 2024 this date has a special significance as it marks the beginning of Brigid 1500, the year-long celebration and commemoration of the life and legacy of St Brigid who died in 524.
For the third year in a row ITMA are delighted to present a composition on the theme of St Brigid. The composer this year is Sandie Purcell, from Kill, Co. Kildare.
St. Brigid’s March is one of my earlier compositions from around 2004. As a Kildare woman, I’ve always been aware of the special marking of St. Brigid’s Day. Growing up, we celebrated stories of the kindness and compassion of St. Brigid, an icon of feminine strength and leadership. Her story is one to continuously share and that’s what I hoped to do with my composition.
St Brigid’s March is one of 8,000+ interactive scores on the ITMA website. Each of these tunes is shown in staff notation, but also comes with a range of learning resources. The sound of each tune is brought to life by the audio, either MIDI or a recording of the tune itself. The controls below each tune can be used to slow down the audio. Pitch names (ABC notation) are hidden by default but can be shown by clicking on the three dots and changing the appearance. Passages can be highlighted to play on repeat and changes can be made to instrumentation. Each tune is also available in PDF format.
