This month’s playlist features a variety of recordings from the Tom Davis collection, including tunes from Séamus Ennis, Antóin Mac Gabhann, Séamus Tansey and more.
This month we delve back into the Tom Davis collection with variety of quality recordings. Tom was present to record Séamus Ennis holding court at the 1974 pipers Tionol ic Co. Louth. We return to a memorable weekend in Gormanstown in 1978 to showcase two great fiddle players, Antóin Mac Gabhan and Paddy Ryan. Three years earlier Tom was at the concert in Miltown Malbay, as part of an early Willie Clancy Summer School, to tape the inimitable Micho Russell on stage.
Tony Mac Mahon received many private recordings from around the country. One tape in particular from the 1990s, made by the renowned East Galway fiddle player Mairín Fahy, features neighbouring musicians including Paddy Doorhey, playing a lovely barndance from the area.
Tony travelled extensively in his career including a trip to Denmark in 1996 with friends Séamus Tansey (flute) and Tommy Keane (pipes), here both displaying mastery of their instruments in a live setting. Back in the Crosses of Annagh in 1993, Tony and Noel Hill are in full flight finishing off a rousing New Year concert with a blast of 7 reels to a rapturous reception.
Enjoy,
Padraic
